The Mission of the Credit Union is to promote the financial well being of its members. To achieve this purpose the Credit Union is committed to providing a broad range of innovative financial products supported by the excellent service of a dedicated staff.
Lucan District Credit Union was founded in 1968. Originally the credit union operated from the back of the Muintir Na Tire hall in the village and was staffed entirely by volunteers from the original membership. The credit union was founded on the principles of democracy and mutuality whereby the membership work together with the objectives of:
- Encouraging thrift and savings amongst members
- Improving the financial welfare of the members
- Eliminating usury (money lenders) by enabling members to borrow money at low interest rates
- Educating members in managing their finances
- Promoting democracy and self-governance. The board are volunteers from the membership, elected at the AGM by other members to run their credit union
- Improving the wider community as members thrive
By the early 1970s Lucan District Credit Union had grown sufficiently to warrant employing full-time staff to manage the business and the administration and to provide longer opening hours to the membership. The premises at 3 The Mall was purchased by the credit union as the new base of operations and this remains the main office of the credit union today.
With the rapid growth of population in the Lucan area from the early 1990s onwards it was decided in the late 90s to open a sub-office to cater for the growing membership. A retail unit was selected in Finnstown Shopping Centre where it has proved convenient for many members.
In the spirit and philosophy of the credit union movement across the globe, Lucan District credit union operates solely for the benefit of our members with the focus being on serving our members financial needs. We are not-for-profit. This means that unlike banks and other businesses, profit is not our reason for being. If a surplus is made at the end of each year it is shared with the members in the form of a dividend.
Lucan District Credit Union is changing in recognition of the constantly changing environment for our members. Our IT system was fully upgraded in March 2016 which allows us to offer full on-line banking to our members and a mobile app to give access to member accounts 24/7, while on the go. Members may also apply for loans on-line.
Lucan District Credit Union is strong and growing. Currently there are 19,270 members with an asset base of 58m. There is a strategic plan in place to grow our credit union substantially over the next five years. The focus will be on continuously improving the service to our members and on the objectives listed above.
As we approach our 50th anniversary we will be working towards growing and strengthening our credit union so that we will be ready for the next fifty years.
